For people who travel a lot, having frequent flyer miles is a must. They are quite handy and an extra perk you get just for flying so much. The only catch, and what is intended, is to keep you on the airline that gives you the miles.
The frequent flyer program many airlines offer is a type of customer loyalty program. Besides a plane ticket, points you gain (a certain number per mile) can go towards upgrades, special services, and various other items.
Some credit card companies also offer miles according to how much you spend, and if you use your credit card a lot, this is exceedingly helpful in racking up miles, so check and see if your card company offers such options.

Also, don't forget to give your frequent flyer number to your travel agent and let the check-in desk at the airport know. Frequent flyer miles are usually available up to twelve months after the trip, but some airlines vary, so be sure to check.

Frequent flyer miles usually include 'free' upgrades and flights. If you earn the requisite amount of miles, you are eligible to claim a flight or upgrade. How much you get depends on the amount of miles you travel.
If you travel a ton and rack up enough miles in a year, you are often eligible for 'elite' membership, commonly denoted by titles such as silver, gold, and platinum. This can provide you with numerous little perks, like early check-in before other flyers, early boarding, waitlist priority, and access to airport lounges.
Airport lounges are little nooks where those 'elite' travelers can rest and relax. Often, they include newspapers and magazines for you to read, snacks like small sandwiches and rolls, coffee, tea and other beverages, and more. Some even offer free internet access. They are also available to credit card holders, such as those carrying American Express, Master Card, DinersClub, and more. Check with the airport to see if you qualify before you get there.
