Create A Free Web Site

With more and more people Internet-savvy, it's not surprising that they're looking for some sort of web presence. While some will take the time, effort and money required to register their own domain name and build up a web site from scratch, most prefer to take the free route.

A free web site is created through a free web host. Such web hosts have ready-made templates, and all you have to do is add your own text and pictures. If you're a novice on the computer, this is an ideal way to create a web site. You don't have to install any special software, since the creation process is browser-based. As long as you have an Internet connection, you can build your pages in minutes. Of course, you will probably have to limit the number of pages you create. Most free web hosts don't allow for more than 20 pages.

If you are planning to create a business web site, a free web host is not a good idea. Not only do they provide limited functionality, they come with other disadvantages. For example, you cannot choose your own domain name; it will be tagged on to that of the free web host. Free web sites are basic and are often full of pop-up advertisements and display banners that might affect your credibility. They are also not popular with search engines like Google, MSN and Yahoo, so you might not be able to attract any traffic to your site.

However, if you're planning a temporary site for a one-time occasion such as a reunion or special event, a free site will do the trick. Youngsters who can't register their own domain names and want to create a simple site to talk about hobbies or holidays will also find free web hosts useful. Free sites are also ideal if you just want to post pictures of an event or vacation.

If you can't afford to register your own domain name or find the process too difficult, but still want a web presence, opt for a free web host, but be prepared to deal with all the limitations. If you can afford to make a small investment, build your own web site - it only involves a monthly maintenance fee of around $10.
