How do you handle know-it-alls (those students who must - simply MUST - prove to you and everyone around them that they know more than anyone else)? Learn more...

Know-it-alls are those students who must - simply MUST - prove to you and everyone around them that they know more than anyone else. They are not trying to show that others are stupid. What they ARE doing is striving for recognition of their intellectual abilities. They need this in order to breathe, so ignoring them will not work. If you can think of them as insecure adults striving for a morsel of appreciation, it will be easier for you to deal with them.
The best way I have found to "handle" them is to find significant accomplishments for which you can reward and recognize them. For example, when you look over their shoulders at their work, point out their organization, their logic, their attention to detail. Point out that they have completed more than the others, and that you see that they are advanced students. First, these compliments must be authentic. Don't tell them that they are ahead of the others if they are not. They are astute and will see through the lies. So look at their work closely and find something to recognize. To synch your alliance, ask them quietly if you can call for their help during class, perhaps to assist slower students. These little comments on their intellectual abilities are all they really need.
